Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are smart materials whose stiffness and shear modulus can be changed by excited magnetic fields. There has been many researches on evaluating the material properties and tribological characteristics of MREs. However, the friction application study of MRE tire had not been examined yet. In this study, a application study of MRE to rolling device is conducted. Various speed conditions are applied to confirm the friction property under different applied magnetic field strengths. Prepared MRE specimen is shown in Fig. 1.
MREs are prepared and a rolling friction tester is fabricated. Silicone-based MRE have been shown to have the best MR effect and widely used in various mechanical and vehicle application. Thus, silicone was used as the matrix for MRE in this study. The fabrication process of the MRE is mainly divided into mixing, hardening, and cooling steps. The shape of the MRE was designed as a tire shape with a inner and outer diameter of 60 and 90 mm. The width of MRE is 50 mm. A magnetic field controlled rolling tester is fabricated to examine the application of MRE tire with various magnetic field strengths. The results show that the MRE is possible to applied to anti-lock brake system (ABS) as a stiffness-controlled tire by controlling the applied magnetic field.
